Shaking Down the Acorns cover

Shaking Down the Acorns is the debut album by the Slocan Ramblers, a Toronto band formed in 2011 and named for the Slocan Valley in British Columbia. It was released on November 30, 2012, without a label, and recorded at Sytesounds in Toronto. The band on the album is Darryl Poulsen on guitar, Frank Evans on banjo, Adrian Gross on mandolin and Alastair Whitehead on bass, with Evans, Poulsen and Whitehead each singing lead.

Of the twelve tracks, seven are songs and five are instrumentals. The songs include the traditional “Wild Bill Jones” and “I’ve Always Been a Rambler,” Charlie Monroe’s “I’m Coming Back (But I Don’t Know When),” Hank Williams’s “Weary Blues from Waitin’” and “The Law and Lonesome” by Corin Raymond and Jonathan Byrd. The instrumentals include Poulsen’s “Norah’s Turn,” Gross’s “Big Time Tuesday,” Evans’s “Frank’s Tune” and Norman Blake’s “Blake’s March.” The band followed it in 2015 with Coffee Creek, which was nominated for Best Traditional Album at the 12th Canadian Folk Music Awards.
