Shine Hallelujah Shine, Volume 2, subtitled “Sacred Songs from the Early Days of Bluegrass,” is the second of two gospel CDs that the Bluegrass Band released on Hay Holler Records in 1991 (HHH-CD 202). The same program also came out on three cassettes. The twenty-two songs on this disc were recorded in July 1991 at Big Mo Recording Studio in Kensington, Maryland.

The Bluegrass Band was banjo player Butch Robins’s group. He first formed it in 1972 and revived it in 1989, after four years (1977–1981) as banjo player in Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys. On these sessions Dudley Connell plays rhythm guitar, Larry Stephenson plays mandolin, and David McLaughlin moves between mandolin, rhythm guitar and bass. Rob McCoury plays lead guitar, Blaine Sprouse plays fiddle, and Ronnie Simpkins and Bill Lux play bass. Connell, Stephenson, McLaughlin and Robins take turns singing lead, and Lux sings the bass part. Connell and McLaughlin had been members of the Johnson Mountain Boys, the Washington, D.C.-area band of the 1980s, and Stephenson had sung with Bill Harrell and the Virginians and with the Bluegrass Cardinals.

Bill Monroe wrote more of the repertoire than anyone else. His songs include “River of Death,” “You’re Drifting Away,” “Wicked Path of Sin,” “I’m Traveling On and On” and the title song. Flatt & Scruggs are represented by “He Took Your Place,” “God Loves His Children” and Flatt’s “I’m Working on a Road to Gloryland.” The rest ranges from Albert E. Brumley’s “I’ll Meet You in the Mornin’,” Cleavant Derricks’s “Just a Little Talk with Jesus,” Merle Travis’s “I Am a Pilgrim” and Hank Williams’s “House of Gold” to the traditional “Crying Holy unto My Lord” and “Wayfaring Stranger.”
