Someday We'll Meet Again documents the Iron Mountain String Band, a Virginia-based group working in the old-time and traditional string band tradition that predates commercial bluegrass. Released in 1981, the album draws on the southern Appalachian dance and song repertoire with "Sourwood Mountain," one of the most durable pieces in the regional canon, among the better-known titles. Old-time string bands in the early 1980s occupied a particular cultural position — sustaining a vernacular tradition that the folk revival had brought to wider attention but that remained distinct from the professional bluegrass circuit. The Iron Mountain String Band's recordings are archival documents as much as commercial releases, preserving repertoire and performance styles that trace back to the fiddle and banjo dance music of the nineteenth century.
