Someday We’ll Meet Again is the third volume of the Iron Mountain String Band’s old-time series on Folkways, issued in 1981 as FA 3836 under the subtitle Old Time Music of the Southern Mountains, Volume 3. The band was formed in New York City by Eric Davidson, Caleb Finch and others, and by the time of this record had been based in Southern California since about 1972. Its repertoire is the old-time music of Virginia and North Carolina, which Davidson began collecting in field recordings in the late 1950s; Davidson learned clawhammer banjo from Wade Ward of Independence, Virginia, and Finch learned fiddle from Ward and from the fiddler Glen Smith. The band takes its name from Iron Mountain, a wooded ridge near Independence, Virginia.
The lineup here is Eric Davidson on banjo, Caleb Finch on fiddle, and Brooke Moyer on guitar and vocals. Of the fourteen tracks, the liner notes class “Sally Anne,” “Chicken Reel,” “Pretty Little Willow” and “Sourwood Mountain” as fiddle-and-banjo dance tunes, and they say “Sally Anne” and “Sourwood Mountain” probably had their present forms at least a hundred years ago. “Waterbound” comes from the repertoire of the Grayson County Bogtrotters of Galax, Virginia, a band the Iron Mountain players took as a model. “Budded Roses,” “I Am a Pilgrim” and the title song “Someday We’ll Meet Again” are guitar-led songs with part singing.
