Songs That Made the Jukebox Play (CMH CMH-9021, 1980) is a twenty-two-track collection on which Mac Wiseman turns his attention to the western swing and honky-tonk material that populated country jukeboxes in the 1940s and 1950s. The album is backed by a western swing ensemble anchored by fiddle and mandolin legend Johnny Gimble, one of the genre's consummate instrumentalists, demonstrating Wiseman's stylistic range well beyond his bluegrass identity. Wiseman brought the same melodic clarity and impeccable phrasing to honky-tonk and swing that he applied to gospel, folk, and old-time songs throughout his career, and the CMH sessions gave him space to revisit the dance-hall repertoire of his formative years. Previously available only on vinyl, the album received its first digital release in a 2023 remaster.
