Started Out to Ramble cover

Started Out to Ramble (Patuxent CD-186, 2009) is Tatiana Hargreaves’s first solo album, made when she was 14. She was from Corvallis, Oregon, and in 2008 became the youngest winner of the Championship Division of the Oregon Oldtime Fiddlers Contest. Bruce Molsky produced the record and arranged it with her, and she wrote the foreword and the tune notes. John Escobar and Tom Mindte recorded it, Mindte mixed it, and Bill Wolf mastered it.

Hargreaves plays fiddle and banjo and sings. Her brother Alex Hargreaves plays fiddle and mandolin; Sarah Jarosz mandolin, banjo and vocals; Emma Beaton cello and vocals; Danny Knicely guitar; Mark Schatz bass; and Molsky fiddle, banjo and guitar. The fifteen tracks, some of them medleys, include “Raleigh and Spencer / Dusty Miller,” “Grub Springs,” “Say Darling Say,” “Pretty Saro,” “Walk Along John to Kansas,” “Margaret Randolph Waltz,” “Rocky Pallet” and “Ginseng Sullivan,” a song written by Norman Blake.

Hargreaves went on to tour with Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch, Laurie Lewis, Darol Anger and Bruce Molsky, and in 2018 became Lecturer of Fiddle at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
