The Lonesome Chronicles is a 2023 CD by the Kathy Kallick Band on Live Oak Records (Live Oak 640), released on 17 October 2023. It was recorded at Opus Studios in Berkeley, California. The band is Kathy Kallick on guitar, Greg Booth on dobro and banjo, Tom Bekeny on mandolin, Annie Staninec on fiddle and Cary Black on bass, and everyone sings. Kallick, who was born in Chicago, was one of the founders of the Good Ol’ Persons, which began in 1975 and was one of the first all-women bluegrass bands, and she formed the Kathy Kallick Band in 1996.
The word “lonesome” appears in six of the fourteen titles. Kallick wrote six of the songs, among them “It’s Lonesome Everywhere I Go,” written in the style of the Delmore Brothers, and “Just Lonesome Ol’ Me & the Radio,” about listening to her husband’s bluegrass radio show. “This Old Lonesome Song” was written with the people lost during the pandemic in mind, Tony Rice among them. Booth wrote the instrumental “Lonesome Dobro Blues” and Bekeny the closing instrumental “Reunion.” Staninec sings lead on “A Lonesome Feeling,” a Billy Henson song the Osborne Brothers recorded, and Bekeny leads “Never Been So Lonesome.” The program also includes John Prine’s “Souvenirs,” William Golden’s “A Beautiful Life” and Earl Scruggs’s banjo tune “Foggy Mountain Chimes,” which Booth plays on dobro.
