Unbroken! Live in Concert is a Universal Music Belgium release by the Broken Circle Breakdown Bluegrass Band, the group named for the bluegrass band in Felix van Groeningen’s film The Broken Circle Breakdown, which opened in Belgium on 10 October 2012. The film is based on a stage play by Johan Heldenbergh and Mieke Dobbels, and in its band scenes the actors play and sing the music themselves. A 2012 soundtrack album is credited to the same name, so this live record is the band’s second.
Discogs credits seven musicians: Johan Heldenbergh (vocals, guitar, banjo), Veerle Baetens (vocals, guitar), Bert Van Bortel (mandolin, guitar, vocals), Nils De Caster (fiddle, mandolin, vocals), Karl Eriksson (banjo, guitar, vocals), Bjorn Eriksson (guitar, dobro, vocals) and Tomas de Smet (double bass, vocals). Bjorn Eriksson wrote the music composed for the film. The Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, which listed a concert by the band on 26 March 2014, describes a first tour of Flanders on which all 14 concerts sold out.
The album came out in 2014 as a 17-track deluxe edition, and a 16-track CD followed in 2015 without the opening “Where the Soul of Man Never Dies.” The program includes songs from the film soundtrack, among them “Wayfaring Stranger,” “Country in My Genes” and “Cowboyman,” alongside “Black Mountain Rag,” “Sin City,” “Do I Ever Cross Your Mind,” “Don’t Think Twice It’s All Right” and “Cherokee Shuffle.”
