Alison Krauss
Alison Krauss is the most successful and decorated female artist in bluegrass and roots-music history — a 27-time Grammy winner whose combination of unmatched vocal purity, bluegrass fiddle virtuosity, and impeccable taste in material has sold over 12 million records and brought traditional bluegrass to the largest audience any bluegrass artist has ever reached. With her band Union Station and in solo and collaborative projects including Raising Sand with Robert Plant, she is one of the defining American musicians of the past 40 years.
- Born Alison Maria Krauss in Decatur, Illinois; raised in Champaign. Started violin at age five; won the Walnut Valley Fiddle Championship at age 13 (1984). Older brother Viktor Krauss is a Nashville bassist and producer.
- Signed with Rounder Records at age 14. Debut album Too Late to Cry (1987) released at age 16.
- Grammy-winning I've Got That Old Feeling (1990) — her second album, produced by Jerry Douglas — was the breakthrough that made her a national figure at age 19.
- Youngest-ever cast member of the Grand Ole Opry when she joined in 1993.
- Permanent lineup of Alison Krauss & Union Station solidified in 1992: Krauss (fiddle, lead vocals), Ron Block (banjo, guitar, vocals), Barry Bales (bass, vocals), Adam Steffey (mandolin, replaced by Jerry Douglas in 1998), and Dan Tyminski (guitar, mandolin, lead vocals, 1994–2024).
- AKUS albums: Every Time You Say Goodbye (1992), So Long So Wrong (1997), New Favorite (2001), Lonely Runs Both Ways (2004), Paper Airplane (2011), Arcadia (2025).
- Solo albums: Now That I've Found You: A Collection (1995, 2× platinum), Forget About It (1999), A Hundred Miles or More (2007), Windy City (2017).
- Featured vocalist on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack (2000) — won the 2002 CMA Album of the Year and five Grammy awards. The soundtrack's success reshaped the commercial landscape for roots music.
- Grammy-winning collaboration with Robert Plant: Raising Sand (2007, Album of the Year at the 2009 Grammys, five Grammy wins total) and Raise the Roof (2021).
- 27 Grammy Awards on 44 nominations — among the most-winning female artists in Grammy history and the most-winning bluegrass artist ever.
- National Medal of Arts (2019). Country Music Hall of Fame induction is widely expected.
- Inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 2021.
- 2025 Arcadia Tour with Union Station featuring new member Russell Moore on guitar/vocals (replacing Dan Tyminski) and Stuart Duncan as touring fiddler.
