Blue Mafia
Blue Mafia is a contemporary Indiana bluegrass band led by husband-wife duo Tony and Dara Wray, built around Tony Wray's aggressive flatpicking guitar, Dara Wray's songwriting, and a three-vocalist lead-singer setup that gives the band an unusually varied texture. Three albums for Pinecastle Records and appearances at DelFest, MerleFest, the Station Inn, and Graves Mountain established them in the modern bluegrass mainstream before they stepped back from full-time touring.
- Founded in 2011 in Muncie, Indiana, by Tony Wray (guitar, vocals) and his wife Dara Wray (mandolin, vocals, primary songwriter). Tony formed the band, he has said, “basically because my wife wanted to be in a band too.”
- Tony Wray came from a jazz-and-country family background; heard bluegrass banjo on the radio as a kid and fell in love. Worked two years with the Ezelle Family in Missouri, two years at Shepherd of the Hills in Branson, and in 1999 moved to Nashville as banjo supervisor at the Gibson Instrument company. Freelance Nashville session work with Ricky Skaggs, Sam Bush, Del McCoury, Randy Kohrs, Tim O'Brien, Sara Evans, Béla Fleck, Marty Stuart, Jim Lauderdale, Los Lobos, Jesse McReynolds, and many more.
- Dara Wray grew up in an Indiana musical family — father Dave Denman is a well-known Indiana musician; grandfather Lowell Denman was a prominent fiddler. Began playing guitar at age 17, later moved to mandolin.
- Independent debut My Cold Heart (2013) caught attention with Dara's original songwriting and Tony's guitar-forward arrangements. Dave Denman guested on harmony and banjo.
- Signed with Pinecastle Records. Pray for Rain (Pinecastle, 2015) featured Cody Looper (banjo), Michael Gregory (bass), and Kent Todd (fiddle, vocals) alongside the Wrays. Critically acclaimed for its Dara-penned originals and reinterpretations of “Moonshiner,” “East Virginia Blues,” and material from the Ralph Stanley and J.D. Crowe catalogs.
- Hanging Tree (Pinecastle, 2016) continued the band's aggressive contemporary bluegrass sound with new banjoist Curtis Bumgarner added to the lineup.
- Three-vocalist setup — Tony, Dara, and Kent Todd alternating leads — gave the band unusual range. Kent Todd's big, emotionally-charged voice contrasts with Dara Wray's restrained delivery.
- Stepped back from full-time touring in 2018 when Tony Wray joined Dan Tyminski's band as banjo player, and Kent Todd took a full-time job to focus on his family.
- Pinecastle supported the band through the hiatus; the group has continued to record and play limited weekend dates.
- Known for exceptional guitar-forward instrumentation and original songwriting that centers women's perspectives in the traditional bluegrass canon of cheating, leaving, dying, and praying.
