Bluegrass bands have always picked up songs from outside the genre, and rock and pop is a deep well. The Beatles (“Norwegian Wood,” “Don’t Pass Me By”) translated well to bluegrass arrangements. The Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil,” “Casey Jones,” and “I Know You Rider” became jamgrass standards. Manfred Mann’s “Fox on the Run” became a Country Gentlemen showstopper. CCR’s “Bad Moon Rising,” Crosby Stills Nash & Young’s “Teach Your Children,” Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers,” and Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire” — these are bluegrass’s rock-and-pop crossover canon.
