Fiddle
Chad Manning is a Spokane-bred fiddler who anchors the David Grisman Sextet, the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience, and Laurie Lewis & the Right Hands — one of the busiest Bay Area string-band fiddlers, who runs a thriving Berkeley-based music school with his wife Catherine.
- Bay Area bluegrass, old-time, and swing fiddler currently with the David Grisman Sextet, the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience, and Laurie Lewis & the Right Hands.
- Grew up in Spokane, Washington, where he absorbed Texas-style fiddle, Western swing, and country music in a vibrant local fiddle community; began fiddle at age 8.
- At 14, took an immersion week of lessons (about eight hours a day) with Joey McKenzie in Corvallis, Oregon, focused on bowing — a formative experience.
- Played in a family band called Homeward Bound that toured the Pacific Northwest before he moved south.
- Joined David Grisman's Bluegrass Experience after Bill Evans recommended him as a sub for Joe Craven, and stayed on permanently.
- Has toured and recorded with J.D. Crowe, Curly Seckler, Alan Munde, Tony Trischka, and Peter Rowan.
- Runs Manning Music in Berkeley with his wife Catherine — a school of roughly nine teachers and around 200 students offering fiddle, mandolin, dobro, guitar, and clawhammer banjo.
