Muddy Roads: Old-Time Music of Clarence Ashley and Doc Watson (Acoustic Disc ACD 80) was released in 2013. It is the second recording by the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience: David Grisman (mandolin, mandola, vocals), Chad Manning (fiddle), Jim Nunally (guitar, vocals), Keith Little (banjo, vocals; mandolin on one track and mandola on another) and Samson Grisman (bass, vocals). Tracy Bigelow Grisman sings on “Omie Wise.” The sixteen tracks were recorded live to two-track analog by Dave Dennison at Dawg Studios and remastered in 24-bit, 96 kHz.
Grisman first heard the music on the Folkways LPs produced by Ralph Rinzler that introduced Doc Watson. At fifteen he heard the tapes that his neighbor and mentor Rinzler had just made in Shouns, Tennessee, of Clarence “Tom” Ashley and his neighbors Clint Howard, Fred Price, Gaither Carlton and Watson. The album, he wrote, is his remembrance of Watson, Ashley and Rinzler. The songs include “Omie Wise,” “Crawdad,” “The Cuckoo Bird” and “The Train That Carried My Girl from Town.”
