"Muddy Roads: Old-Time Music of Clarence Ashley and Doc Watson," released in October 2013 on Acoustic Disc (ACD-80), is the second David Grisman Bluegrass Experience album, featuring Grisman (mandolin, mandola, vocals) alongside Chad Manning (fiddle), Jim Nunally (guitar, vocals), Keith Little (banjo, mandolin, vocals), and Samson Grisman (bass, vocals). The album pays tribute to the repertoire Grisman first encountered on the early-1960s Folkways LPs that introduced Doc Watson to the world and documented Clarence Ashley's Appalachian old-time style — records that were formative influences on the young Grisman before he became one of acoustic music's most important innovators. For Grisman, this was a personal roots reconnection of considerable significance. Note: personnel cache lists Lester Armistead as bassist — the confirmed bassist is Samson Grisman.
