The Hazel and Alice Session presents Laurie Lewis and the Right Hands paying tribute to Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard, the duo whose 1970s recordings had proven that women could be central rather than peripheral figures in old-time and bluegrass music. Lewis, a Berkeley-based fiddler and singer among the most musically substantial figures in the progressive bluegrass world since the 1980s, brings her characteristic warmth and technical precision to material she clearly holds in deep respect. The record functions as both homage to two pioneering women and a demonstration of how their influence has propagated through subsequent generations of female acoustic musicians.
