American Favorite Ballads Vol. 3

Pete Seeger

Album · 1961

American Favorite Ballads Vol. 3 is one installment in Pete Seeger's long-running series for Folkways Records that collectively constituted one of the most ambitious acts of American folk music documentation and popularization in the twentieth century. Seeger approached the common repertoire of Anglo-American balladry and parlor song as a shared inheritance belonging equally to everyone. Tracks like 'Clementine' and 'She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain' were familiar to virtually every American schoolchild, and Seeger's performances were designed to invite participation rather than passive listening. His five-string banjo playing, drawing on the older frailing tradition rather than the Scruggs style, presented the instrument as a vehicle for community singing.
