Live 1964 (Rockbeat ROC-CD-3276, listed by Discogs as Live 1964 featuring Doc Watson) was released in 2014. It collects 28 tracks, including a spoken introduction, recorded by Bill Monroe and His Blue Grass Boys on 23 August 1964 at Sunset Park in Oxford, Pennsylvania.
The first part of the program pairs Monroe on mandolin with Doc Watson on guitar. Watson sings lead on “Oh What Does the Deep Sea Say,” “Midnight on the Stormy Deep” and “Rabbit in a Log,” with Monroe on the tenor part, and they play “East Tennessee Blues,” “Watson Blues” and “Paddy on the Turnpike” as instrumentals.
The remainder is the Blue Grass Boys: Monroe with Jack Cooke on guitar, Don Lineberger on banjo, Horace “Benny” Williams on fiddle and James Monroe on bass. Sandy Rothman plays guitar in place of Cooke on tracks 13 to 20, from “The Panhandle Country” through “Rawhide.” Titles include “Muleskinner Blues,” “True Life Blues,” “Rocky Road Blues,” “Uncle Pen,” “Kentucky Waltz” and “I’m Walking the Dog.” Monroe sings lead on “Use to Be” and “Footprints in the Snow.”
