Bluegrass Holiday, the J.D. Crowe and the Kentucky Mountain Boys release reissued in 2005, draws from recordings Crowe made during his years leading the Kentucky Mountain Boys before the formation of the New South. Crowe's banjo work in this period was already marked by the Scruggs-derived precision and tonal clarity that would define his reputation, and the Kentucky Mountain Boys provided a capable and sympathetic ensemble. The material belongs to the hard-driving bluegrass tradition of the late 1950s and 1960s, when Crowe was absorbing the influences that would eventually lead him toward a more contemporary approach. For listeners tracing Crowe's development, this collection documents the traditional ground from which his later innovations departed.
