Bluegrass is a 1964 album by Red Allen, the powerful Kentucky singer who worked with Frank Wakefield and later with Don Reno in ensembles producing some of the more dynamically forceful recordings of the period. Allen came from Pigeon Roost, Kentucky, and his voice had the high, hard edge of the eastern Kentucky tradition. He was among the strongest male leads in the music during the early 1960s, and his recordings from this era with Wakefield and the Kentuckians are prized by serious bluegrass collectors. His career was marked by bad timing and commercial misfortune, but the recordings he left behind make a strong case for his place among the music's essential vocalists.
