Bowling Green and Other Folk Songs from the Southern Mountains was issued by Tradition Records in New York as TLP 1018, and was recorded in August 1956 by Mel Kaiser. Irene and Ellen Kossoy, identical twins born in New York City in 1938, sing; Erik Darling plays guitar and banjo. Kenneth S. Goldstein edited the album and wrote its liner notes.
The fourteen songs are, on side one, “Bowling Green,” “I Never Will Marry,” “I’ll Fly Away,” “The Darby Ram,” “In the Pines,” “The Banks of the Ohio” and “The Wagoner’s Lad,” and, on side two, “Poor Ellen Smith,” “Single Girl,” “What Will We Do with the Baby O,” “Down in a Willow Garden,” “Little Birdie,” “Willie Moore” and “Engine 143.” Tradition reissued the album on CD in 1997 (TCD 1065, titled Bowling Green) and again in 2002 (TCD 3007/1).
The sisters went on to play the first Newport Folk Festival, in 1959.
