Bowling Green and Other Southern Mountain Folksongs, recorded in 1956, introduced the Kossoy Sisters to a national audience at a moment when urban interest in Appalachian folk music was beginning to build toward the full flood of the folk revival. Irene and Ellen Kossoy, singing sisters from New York who had immersed themselves in the older song tradition, brought to the record a purity of approach and a repertoire drawn from the deepest layers of Anglo-American balladry. Accompanied by Erik Darling on banjo and guitar, the album captured material that connected directly to the Child ballad tradition and the Southern mountain song culture. The record stands as a document of the pre-revival moment, when the music was still being treated primarily as living tradition.
