"Dawg Plays Big Mon: Happy Birthday Bill Monroe!," released on Acoustic Disc (ACD-77) for the centennial of Monroe's birth in 2011, is not a single new studio session but a tribute compilation assembled by David Grisman from previously unissued live and studio recordings honoring the father of bluegrass. The album features an extraordinary roster — Tony Rice, Jerry Garcia, Del McCoury, John Hartford, Old & in the Way, Vassar Clements, Red Allen, Jethro Burns, and Herb Pedersen — alongside a centerpiece interview of Monroe by Ralph Rinzler that Grisman recorded in 1965. The Grisman-Watson collaboration has its own body of work on Acoustic Disc; this album is specifically a centennial tribute documenting the deep intergenerational network that Monroe's music created across six decades of acoustic music.
