Early Dawg cover

Early Dawg, released by Sugar Hill in 1980, is not a record of 1980 playing. It collects live tapes made in 1966, when David Grisman was in his early twenties and had not yet invented the music he became known for.
What it catches is a young mandolin player deep in bluegrass and already pressing at its edges. Del McCoury plays guitar and sings, Jerry McCoury is on bass, with Bill Keith on banjo and Artie Rose on guitar on some tracks. Monroe tunes and Flatt and Scruggs numbers sit beside early Grisman originals - "Sugar Hill Ramble," "Fanny Hill," "Opus 38" and "Opus 57" - several of which he would still be playing thirty years later, by then at the head of a very different band.
