Folk Music at Newport, Part 1 (Vanguard 77007-2) is a compilation CD issued in 1995 with 24 live recordings from the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. The programme runs from Bill Monroe’s “Blue Moon of Kentucky” and “Shady Grove,” the latter with Peter Rowan and Tex Logan, to Ian & Sylvia, the Rev. Gary Davis, Mississippi John Hurt and the Chambers Brothers. Track 20 is “Little Sadie” by the banjoist Bill Keith and the guitarist Jim Rooney.
Keith, who was born in Boston and graduated from Amherst College, joined Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in 1963 and stayed about nine months; he then played plectrum banjo with the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. Rooney, also from Boston, met Keith at Amherst. In 1962 the two recorded Bluegrass Livin’ on the Mountain with the mandolinist Joe Val for Prestige Folklore. Rooney later became director and talent coordinator of the Newport Folk Festival, and the Vanguard LP Festival – The Newport Folk Festival 1965 (VRS-9225, 1967) carries Keith and Rooney’s “Banjo Medley” from the same July 1965 festival, recorded in Freebody Park.
