John’s Gospel Quartet (Wango LP 103) was released in September 1966 and credited to the Stanley Brothers. It was recorded on 14 December 1963 at Johnny’s Used Cars in Baltimore, with Carter Stanley on guitar, Ralph Stanley on banjo, George Shuffler and Jack Cooke on guitars and Henry Dockery on bass. John Wilbanks and Ray Davis are credited as co-producers on the release.
The twelve tracks are sacred songs. Shuffler sings lead on “The Old Crossroads,” “Drifting Too Far from the Shore,” “Uncloudy Day,” “Lonely Tombs” and “Someone’s Last Day,” Ralph Stanley on “Just a Little Talk with Jesus,” “Precious Memories” and “I Am a Pilgrim,” and Cooke on “Over in the Glory Land,” “Amazing Grace” and “A Beautiful Life.” “I’ll Fly Away / In the Sweet Bye and Bye” is an instrumental medley. Wango issued a second LP under the same title the same month, LP 105, which draws on the December 1963 sessions and on one recorded on 22 November 1964 with Red Stanley on fiddle and Barry Glickman on bass. County Records reissued LP 103 in 1977 as Stanley Brothers of Virginia, Volume 3: Uncloudy Day.
