Live at the Opry: Celebrating 50 Years on the Grand Ole Opry, released by MCA in 1989, was recorded live at the Grand Ole Opry House over May and June of that year to mark Bill Monroe's half-century on the show — Monroe had first appeared on the Opry in 1939. The Blue Grass Boys lineup that night was Tom Ewing on guitar (now carrying many of the lead vocals as Monroe approached eighty), Clarence "Tater" Tate on fiddle, Blake Williams on banjo, and Billy Rose on bass. The program includes Monroe staples — New Mule Skinner Blues, Molly and Tenbrooks, In the Pines, Rawhide — and reaches back to include one cut from a 1948 Opry broadcast, a small nod to the band that started everything.
