Old and in the Way's 1975 album captures what was effectively a one-season supergroup performing live at the Boarding House in San Francisco in October 1973. The lineup — Jerry Garcia on banjo, David Grisman on mandolin, Peter Rowan on guitar and vocals, Vassar Clements on fiddle, and John Kahn on bass — brought Grateful Dead credibility to bluegrass repertoire and exposed the music to a rock audience that had little previous exposure. Rowan's singing on "Midnight Moonlight" became one of the era's most evocative bluegrass vocal performances. The album's commercial success in the mid-1970s counterculture market helped establish a lasting overlap between bluegrass and the rock listener's world.
