Old & In the Way was released in February 1975 on Round Records (RX 103). It was recorded live on 8 October 1973 at the Boarding House in San Francisco by Owsley Stanley and Vickie Babcock, and produced by David Grisman, who also wrote the liner notes. The band had formed in 1973 and played about fifty shows that year; every official release of the group comes from that October engagement.

The five players are Peter Rowan on guitar, Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead on banjo, David Grisman on mandolin, Vassar Clements on fiddle and John Kahn on bass, with Rowan, Garcia and Grisman singing. Rowan wrote “Midnight Moonlight,” “Panama Red” and “Land of the Navajo,” Grisman the title song, and Clements “Kissimmee Kid.” The rest of the ten tracks include “Pig in a Pen,” Carter Stanley’s “White Dove,” Jack Bonus’s “The Hobo Song” and a version of the Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses.”
