Old Timey Concert is a two-record set by Doc Watson, Clint Howard and Fred Price, recorded live in 1967 for the Seattle Folklore Society and released by Vanguard ten years later, in 1977 (VSD 107/08). Howard and Price had been Watson’s bandmates in Clarence Ashley’s group, and all three appear on the early-1960s recordings released as Old Time Music at Clarence Ashley’s. Phil Williams recorded the tapes; Manny Greenhill produced the album and Mark Berry mixed it.

The trio format sets Howard’s guitar and Price’s fiddle alongside Watson, who moves between guitar, harmonica, banjo and mandolin. Howard sings lead on a large share of the songs, including “New River Train,” “Sunny Tennessee,” “My Home’s Across the Blue Ridge Mountains,” “Reuben’s Train” and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” and Watson and Price join him in three-part harmony on “Mountain Dew” and “On the Banks of the Old Tennessee.” Price sings lead on “Rank Stranger.” Watson plays banjo on “Slewfoot,” “Reuben’s Train” and “Cackling Hen,” and mandolin on the Monroe Brothers’ “What Does the Deep Sea Say” and on “Long Journey Home,” both of which he sings. He performs alone on “Sittin’ on Top of the World,” Alton Delmore’s “My Mama’s Gone (Gambler’s Yodel)” and “Wanted Man,” with guitar only, and on “Little Orphan Girl,” with guitar and harmonica. The set also includes G. B. Grayson’s “I Saw a Man at the Close of the Day” and a spoken “Sears-Roebuck Routine” by Howard and Price.
