Ralph Stanley and Raymond Fairchild (Rebel C-1677, 1989) pairs two of traditional bluegrass's most celebrated banjo players in a cassette-only release recorded September 26, 1989, at Maggard Studios in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. Raymond Fairchild (1939–2019) — a five-time world champion picker from Cherokee, North Carolina, of half-Cherokee heritage, whose explosive style earned him two gold records and regular Grand Ole Opry appearances — opens with a talking-banjo showcase. Curly Ray Cline (fiddle), Sammy Adkins (guitar), and Wallace and Wayne Crowe (guitar, bass) provide backing. Released as a cassette-only pressing with limited initial distribution, the album received its first major review in Bluegrass Unlimited around 1991.
