Shaken by a Low Sound, the second album by the Boston band Crooked Still, came out on 22 August 2006, on Signature Sounds in the United States and True North in Canada. The group formed in 2001: vocalist Aoife O’Donovan and bassist Corey DiMario met at the New England Conservatory that spring, and that summer they met Rushad Eggleston, who was studying cello at Berklee, and Gregory Liszt, a banjo player and graduate student at MIT.
The record has no fiddle in the core band. O’Donovan sings lead over Liszt’s banjo, Eggleston’s cello and DiMario’s bass, with Eggleston also singing on “Ain’t No Grave” and “Mountain Jumper,” and Casey Driessen adds fiddle on some tracks. The eleven tracks combine traditional songs such as “Little Sadie,” “Railroad Bill,” “Wind and Rain” and “New Railroad” with Bill Monroe’s “Can’t You Hear Me Callin’,” Claude Ely’s “Ain’t No Grave,” Bob Dylan’s “Oxford Town” (paired with “Cumberland Gap”), “Come On in My Kitchen,” and two newly written pieces: “Ecstasy,” credited to Carter, Leland and O’Donovan, and Eggleston’s “Mountain Jumper.”
“Little Sadie” and “Ecstasy” were used in the E3 2018 trailer for the video game The Last of Us Part II. Eggleston played his last show with the band in November 2007, and cellist Tristan Clarridge and fiddler Brittany Haas joined in January 2008.
