Shaken By a Low Sound cover

Shaken by a Low Sound, Crooked Still's 2006 Signature Sounds release, deepened the Boston-based ensemble's exploration of old-time and bluegrass material through unconventional instrumentation. The group, built around Aoife O'Donovan's vocals, Corey DiMario's bass, Greg Liszt's banjo, and Rushad Eggleston's cello, brought a chamber music awareness to folk repertoire that distinguished them from either the traditional or newgrass camps. The cello in place of fiddle and the emphasis on rhythmic space give the record a distinctive gravity. Shaken by a Low Sound helped define a post-collegiate acoustic music scene that looked simultaneously backward to pre-commercial folk sources and outward to contemporary composition.
