Stanley Brothers on WCYB Bristol

The Stanley Brothers

Album · 1988 · Rebel REB 855

The Stanley Brothers on WCYB Bristol, released by Rebel Records in 1988 (REB 855), preserves two complete radio shows from 1947 — the very beginning of the Stanley Brothers' professional career, when they were the house band on WCYB's Farm and Fun Time program in Bristol, Tennessee, only weeks after they had first turned to music full-time. The recordings come from sixteen-inch transcription discs cut at the station, with Carter and Ralph still developing the sound that would become bluegrass — material like Cotton Eyed Joe, Molly and Tenbrooks, Little Glass of Wine, and Blue Moon of Kentucky already in evidence. As primary documents of the earliest professional Stanleys, the recordings are essentially without rival.
