The Kentucky Colonels

Album · 1976 · Rounder 0098

The Kentucky Colonels (Rounder Records 0098, 1975) is a retrospective album compiling recordings from the Los Angeles-based traditional bluegrass ensemble that was one of the most influential groups in the genre's spread to the West Coast folk audience in the early 1960s. Clarence White plays guitar; Roland White plays mandolin; Bob Worford plays banjo; and Eric White plays bass. The Rounder collection draws from sessions documenting the Colonels before Clarence White's 1969 departure to join the Byrds and his death in 1973, assembling a portrait of the ensemble that made his flatpicking technique one of the most widely discussed instrumental innovations in acoustic music. Eric White was the younger brother of Clarence and Roland, completing the three-brother core of the band's most active recording configuration.
