The White Brothers

The Kentucky Colonels

Album · 1976 · Trio PA 6083

The White Brothers by The Kentucky Colonels, released on Rounder in 1976 from European concert recordings made in 1973, documents Roland, Clarence, and Eric White playing together after the original Colonels had dissolved. Clarence, whose flatpicking had by then influenced a generation and who would die tragically in 1973, is the gravitational center of this recording — his guitar work is fluid, daring, and unmistakably his own. The White Brothers configuration was a more informal band than the classic Colonels, with a relaxed repertoire that moved easily between bluegrass, country, and rock material. The album is an invaluable document of Clarence White's late playing and a record of the three brothers' musical kinship.
