This Train is a Wayfaring Strangers album released by Rounder in September 2003. The group is the project of the fiddler and pianist Matt Glaser, chair of Berklee’s string department, who brought together roots musicians such as the banjo player Tony Trischka, the clarinetist Andy Statman and the guitarist and mandolinist John McGann to explore what American roots music and jazz have in common. After the group’s first recording, Shifting Sands of Time (2001), Glaser formed a more permanent group, nine members at the time of the Boston Globe’s coverage.
Four singers share the vocals: Aoife O’Donovan, Ruth Ungar, Molly Mason and Tracy Bonham. The instrumentation goes well beyond a bluegrass band—Bruce Molsky, Darol Anger and Jay Ungar on fiddles alongside Glaser on violin and piano, Laszlo Gardony on piano, Art Baron on trombone, Steve Gorn on bansuri, Rushad Eggleston on cello, Jim Whitney on bass and Jamey Haddad on drums and percussion. The eleven songs are “This Train,” “Columbus Stockade Blues,” “When the Golden Leaves Begin to Fall,” “Lord Search My Heart,” “Cluck Old Hen,” “Don’t This Road Look Rough and Rocky,” “Lazy John,” “Sit Down Servant,” “When You Go Walking After Midnight,” “Don’t Put Off Until Tomorrow” and “Who Will Sing for Me?”
