The 1990s reshaped bluegrass commercially and stylistically. Alison Krauss and Union Station became the most successful bluegrass act of the era, winning Grammys and crossing into country and pop airplay. Doc Watson, Bill Monroe, and the elder statesmen kept recording. The Nashville Bluegrass Band, Lonesome River Band, and IIIrd Tyme Out anchored the more traditional side. Gillian Welch’s “Orphan Girl” appeared in 1994, signaling a different kind of revival. Rhonda Vincent stepped out as a bandleader. Richard Thompson’s “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” came in from outside and stayed. Seventy-four songs first-released between 1990 and 1999.
Each song’s page on Picker’s Guide has chord charts, lyrics, recordings, and song history.
