Nadine Landry
Nadine Landry is a bass player, guitarist and singer from the Gaspé Peninsula of Quebec who has played upright bass and sung in the Portland, Oregon, old-time band the Foghorn Stringband since the late 2000s. She also records and tours in a duo with the band’s fiddler, Sammy Lind, and plays Cajun music with Jesse Lége and Joel Savoy in the Cajun Country Revival.
She was born and raised in a musical family on the Gaspé Peninsula, on Quebec’s east coast, in the Acadian country of rural Quebec, and her songs often come down from those Acadian roots by way of Cajun music. She is at home on guitar as well as upright bass and has played in bands ranging from old-time to honky-tonk, swing and Cajun. She came to the Foghorn Stringband from Quebec by way of the Yukon.
She joined the Foghorn Stringband in 2008, in the years when Lind and Caleb Klauder were also touring as the Foghorn Duo, and from 2009 to 2011, when the band was again a full string band, she played bass and sang alongside Lind on fiddle, Klauder on mandolin, Patrick Lind on rhythm guitar and Peter Leone on banjo; that group recorded but released no album. Landry, Lind and Klauder also worked as the Foghorn Trio, with Landry on guitar, and in October 2011 released Sud de la Louisiane. In the winter of 2011 the singer and guitarist Reeb Willms joined, and the quartet of Lind, Klauder, Landry and Willms, all four singing, has stayed together since, recording Outshine the Sun (2012), Devil in the Seat (2015) and Rock Island Grange (2018), which includes “Reuben’s Train,” “Train on the Island” and “Lonesome Homesick Blues.” With the band she has played the Shetland and Orkney folk festivals and toured Ireland, Denmark, Finland and Malaysia, and the band has also performed with Dirk Powell as the Dirk Powell Band.
With Lind she released the duo album Granddad’s Favorite in August 2010, a mix of country songs such as “A Fool Such as I” and “Turn the Cards Slowly” and Cajun pieces such as “Parlez Nous a Boire” and “Les Oiseaux Vont Chanter.” As a duo they have also played with Alice Gerrard, Laurie Lewis, Tom Rozum and Tim O’Brien, and as of 2025 and 2026 they lived in her home region, the Baie-des-Chaleurs in Gaspésie, and were still members of the Foghorn Stringband and the Cajun Country Revival, with duo concerts on Ministers Island, New Brunswick, on 13 July 2025 and in Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, on 5 July 2026.
