Bean Blossom is a double LP issued by MCA (MCA2-8002) in November 1973. It was recorded on 16 and 17 June 1973 at the seventh annual Bluegrass Festival that Bill Monroe held at Bean Blossom, Indiana. Walter Haynes and Snuffy Miller produced it, and the stage introductions by Hairl Hensley of WSM and Billy Cole of WHO were kept in.

Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys at the time were Bob Fowler on guitar, Jack Hicks on banjo, Kenny Baker on fiddle and Guy Stevenson on bass. They play “Mule Skinner Blues,” “You Won’t Be Satisfied That Way,” “Uncle Pen” and “Blue Moon of Kentucky.” Jim & Jesse and the Virginia Boys do “Ole Slew-Foot” and “Sweet Little Miss Blue Eyes.” James Monroe, Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys, Lester Flatt and the Nashville Grass, and Carl Jackson each have their own sets. Martin’s band had Ronnie Prevette on mandolin, Kenny Ingram on banjo and Paul Mullins on fiddle.

Side four brings the acts together. Bill and James Monroe sing “Roll On Buddy,” and Bill joins Jim & Jesse on “I Wonder Where You Are Tonight,” singing tenor to Jim McReynolds’s lead. After a fiddlers’ roll call, “Down Yonder,” “Soldier’s Joy” and “Grey Eagle” are played by a massed fiddle section of Baker, Jim Brock, Lonnie Pierce, Joe Meadows, Randall Collins, Buck Ryan, Gordon Terry, Howdy Forrester, Tex Logan, Curly Ray Cline, Paul Warren and Tater Tate. The album closes with “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” Monroe leading the audience.
