Country Pickin’ and Singin’

The Stanley Brothers

Album · 1958 · Mercury MG 20349

Country Pickin' and Singin', released by Mercury in 1958 (MG 20349), was the first long-playing LP collection of Stanley Brothers material — twelve sides drawn from their Mercury tenure, including several previously unreleased tracks. The Stanleys had signed with Mercury in 1953 after their early Columbia run; the years that followed produced some of their most haunting material, with Carter's lead voice and Ralph's high tenor at their most stark. Mercury dropped the brothers in the same year the album appeared, sending them on to the next of their many label moves. The LP remains the canonical anthology of their Mercury period.
