Country Pickin’ and Singin’ was released by Mercury in September 1958 (MG 20349). According to the Clinch Mountain Echo discography, it was the first collection of Stanley Brothers material issued on LP.

Its twelve tracks come from Mercury sessions made between November 1953 and February 1957. Seven had already appeared on Mercury singles, among them “Orange Blossom Special,” “A Voice from on High,” “Poison Lies,” “Big Tilda” and “The Flood.” Five were first released here: “Who Will Call You Sweetheart,” “Angel Band,” “Clinch Mountain Blues,” “You’re Still On My Mind” and “Tragic Love.”

Carter Stanley (guitar, lead vocals) and Ralph Stanley (banjo, tenor) are on every track, while the Clinch Mountain Boys changed from session to session. Jim Williams played mandolin and Ralph Mayo fiddle at the November 1953 session in Nashville’s Bradley Studio; Joe Meadows played fiddle on the April 1955 session at RCA Victor Studio, which produced “Tragic Love” with Williams and Bill Lowe on bass; and the December 1955 session at Bradley Studio, which produced “Angel Band” and “Clinch Mountain Blues,” featured Curley Lambert on mandolin, Art Stamper on fiddle and Lowe again on bass. “The Flood” was recorded in 1957 at the WCYB radio studio in Bristol, Virginia, with George Shuffler on mandolin and Chubby Anthony on fiddle. Mercury dropped the Stanley Brothers from its roster the same year the album came out.
