Hylo Brown is a 1959 album by Hylo Brown and the Timberliners released on Capitol Records (T 1168), recorded in two August 1958 sessions at Bradley Film & Recording Studio in Nashville and produced by Capitol's country chief Ken Nelson. Frank "Hylo" Brown (guitar, lead vocals)—a Kentucky-born high tenor who had been recording for Capitol since 1954—fronts the Timberliners: Jim Smoak (five-string banjo), William "Red" Rector (mandolin, vocals), Clarence "Tater" Tate (fiddle), and Joe "Flap Jack" Phillips (bass). Free of countrypolitan production gloss, the album is a textbook of old-fashioned Appalachian balladry and gospel-inflected material, widely regarded as a classic of the early LP era. Note: the catalog's associated tracklist belongs to the 1967 Rural Rhythm album RRHB-168, not to Capitol T 1168, which carries a different twelve-song program.
