Live in Holland grew out of a 1981 tour of Europe by Joe Val and the New England Bluegrass Boys, and was released that year by the Dutch label Strictly Country (SCR 4). It was recorded by Mirasound in Wijhe, in the Netherlands, with Gé Voskuylen as engineer and liner notes by Rienk Janssen.

Val, born Joseph Valiante in Everett, Massachusetts, in 1926, played mandolin and sang. The rest of the band was Danny Paisley on guitar, singing lead and tenor, Paul Silvius on banjo and baritone vocals, and Eric Levenson on bass. The twelve songs include three from Bill Monroe’s repertoire, “Blue Moon of Kentucky,” “Molly and Tenbrooks” and “Rose of Old Kentucky,” along with “Lonesome Old River,” “Satan’s Jewelled Crown,” “The Prisoner’s Song,” “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” and “Don’t Give Your Heart to a Rambler.”

Val formed the New England Bluegrass Boys in 1970, and the band’s first album, One Morning in May, was Rounder Records’ first bluegrass release. In 1982 the band travelled to fifteen states and five foreign countries. Val died in 1985, and the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame inducted him in 2018.
