Mountain Soul, released in 2001 on Epic Records, represented Patty Loveless's full-scale return to the acoustic sounds of her Kentucky upbringing after a successful mainstream country career. The project assembled a remarkable cast of bluegrass musicians including Ricky Skaggs, Alison Krauss, Ralph Stanley, and members of Union Station to frame Loveless's powerful alto in settings that honored the emotional directness of Appalachian music. The album earned Grammy recognition and helped broaden the post-O Brother audience for acoustic mountain music.
