Essential Folk-Revival Songs

Dylan, Seeger, Guthrie's bluegrass adjacency

34 songs

The folk revival of the late 1950s and 60s — the coffeehouses, the marches, the rediscovery of old mountain ballads, the Newport Folk Festival — sent a generation of songs into the bluegrass repertoire. Bob Dylan’s catalog crossed over heavily (“Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright,” “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “The Times They Are A-Changin'”). The same era brought “Where Have All the Flowers Gone,” “This Land is Your Land,” “Goodnight Irene,” and “500 Miles” back to mass popularity. Old ballads got dusted off too (“Fair and Tender Ladies,” “Dink’s Song,” “Tennessee Stud”). Thirty-four songs the folk revival fed bluegrass.

Each song’s page on Picker’s Guide has chord charts, lyrics, recordings, and song history.
