Jimmy D. Brock
Jimmy Dale Brock, also credited as Jimmy D. Brock, Jimmy Brock and Jim Brock Jr., is a bass player and the son of the fiddler Jim Brock. From 1978 to 1987 he was the bass player on the Osborne Brothers’ records, and on albums that Bobby and Sonny Osborne made with Mac Wiseman and Benny Martin.
His first record was his father’s first album, Sawdust from the Bow of Jim Brock, cut at Superior Sound Studios in Hendersonville, Tennessee, and released by Atteiram in 1974, with Jesse McReynolds on mandolin, Vic Jordan on banjo and Joe Stuart on guitar. On 6 April 1976, credited as Jim Brock Jr., he played bass on Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper’s album for Rounder, recorded at the Starday studio in Nashville.
With the Osborne Brothers he first appears at the November 1978 sessions for the CMH album Bluegrass Concerto, at Hilltop Studios in Nashville. In 1979, at the same studio, he played on The Essential Bluegrass Album with Mac Wiseman, and with Bobby Osborne, Wynn Osborne and Joe Stuart on Benny Martin’s Big Daddy of the Fiddle and Bow. He was on the brothers’ I Can Hear Kentucky Calling Me (1980) and on Bobby Osborne and His Mandolin (1981), an album of instrumentals recorded at Cumberland Sound. On the brothers’ Sugar Hill records he played on Some Things I Want to Sing About (1984), recorded in Hendersonville, and on the two volumes of Once More, made at Studio 19 in Nashville in 1986 and 1987.
