20 Bluegrass Favorites is a Rural Rhythm album credited to Don Reno, Bill Harrell and the Tennessee Cut-Ups, recorded in 1967, most of it in February, and released that year. The group is Reno on banjo and guitar, Harrell on guitar, Ronnie Reno on mandolin and George Shuffler on bass. Reno had worked with Red Smiley until the two parted in 1964, and he and Harrell then formed a duo.
The twenty tracks are short, none running longer than two and a half minutes. They include “Nine Pound Hammer,” sung by Ronnie Reno, and “White House Blues,” “When the Roses Bloom Again” and “Worried Man Blues,” sung by Harrell with Don Reno on tenor. Two Bill Monroe songs, “Footprints in the Snow” and “Molly and Tenbrooks,” appear alongside “The Great Speckled Bird,” “Keep on the Sunny Side” and “Man of Constant Sorrow.” Four tracks are instrumentals: “I Don’t Love Nobody,” “Dill Pickle Rag,” “Under the Double Eagle” and “Limehouse Blues.”
