Bluegrass in the Smokies: 30 Traditional Classics (Rural Rhythm RHY 315) is a compilation from the Rural Rhythm Records catalog presenting Arthur Lee "Red" Smiley and an ensemble of traditional performers in a thirty-track survey of the bluegrass repertoire drawn from the label's archive. Smiley plays guitar and sings lead; Clarence "Tater" Tate plays fiddle; Gene Burrows plays mandolin; Billy Edwards plays guitar and banjo; and John Palmer holds the bass. Smiley — who had spent his most commercially active years in partnership with Don Reno on King Records — brings the same warm baritone and direct traditional sensibility to these Rural Rhythm recordings that made his King Records work among the most listened-to in bluegrass history, here assembled into a compilation that surveys the traditional repertoire across both secular and devotional material.
