Bluegrass Smash Hits Vol. 1

The Mashville Brigade

Album · 2008 · Rural Rhythm RHY-CD 325

Bluegrass Smash Hits Vol. 1 (Rural Rhythm RHY-CD 325, 2008) is the first album by the Mashville Brigade, a Nashville group that began as a midweek gig at the Station Inn. The players were Darrell Webb on guitar and lead vocals, Ashby Frank on mandolin and vocals, Aaron McDaris on banjo, Jim VanCleve on fiddle and Randy Barnes on bass; between them they had come from the Rage (Rhonda Vincent’s band), Special Consensus, the Grascals, Mountain Heart and NewFound Road. VanCleve produced.

The sixteen tracks are bluegrass standards, among them “Banks of the Ohio,” “Little Maggie,” “Sitting on Top of the World,” “Roving Gambler” and “Ain’t Nobody Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone,” with four instrumentals: “John Henry,” “Going Across the Sea,” “Salt Creek” and “Sally Goodin’.” The band recorded on the Station Inn’s stage in daylight, with no audience and no overdubs, setting up in a circle around the microphones and finishing the album in about eight hours. Rural Rhythm released it on 22 April 2008 as the first of a planned series.
