Fallen Leaves

Rusty York and the Kentucky Mountain Boys

Album · 1961 · Blue Grass Special 824 EP 603

Fallen Leaves is a six-song, 45 rpm extended-play record issued in 1961 on the Blue Grass Special label (824-EP-603). Discogs describes Blue Grass Special as a Cincinnati, Ohio, label owned by Jimmie Skinner, who was also known for a mail-order and retail record business in the city.

The record is split between two acts. Skinner has the title song, “Fallen Leaves,” and “Short Life of Trouble,” both credited to him as composer. Rusty York and the Kentucky Mountain Boys have the other four: “Knoxville Girl,” “Cindy,” the instrumental “Kentucky Mountain Chimes” and “Over the Hill to the Poorhouse.” York was born in Harlan, Kentucky, in 1935 and moved to Cincinnati with his family in 1952; he counted Skinner among his earliest bluegrass idols and played locally with him. In 1959 his rockabilly single “Sugaree” reached number 77 on the Billboard Hot 100, and by the 1960s he had returned to bluegrass. The label put out other EPs by the same acts in 1960–61, among them York’s Little Rosewood Casket and a Skinner and York split, Doin’ My Time.
