Rusty York and the Kentucky Mountain Boys' Fallen Leaves, issued on the Blue Grass Special label (EP 603) around 1961–62, is a six-track extended-play 45 rpm release documenting the Cincinnati-based guitarist and banjoist's bluegrass work alongside vocalist Jimmie Skinner. York—born in Harlan, Kentucky in 1935—had crossed between rockabilly and bluegrass through the late 1950s, charting a national rockabilly single in 1959 before returning to traditional forms. Blue Grass Special was the small Ohio imprint connected to Skinner's Cincinnati record store and mail-order operation, a key distribution node for mid-century bluegrass. The EP's program—including "Knoxville Girl," "Short Life of Trouble," and the title track—captures York's mountain sound at its most traditional and unadorned.
