Good Deal! Doc Watson in Nashville, released in 1968, marked Watson's move from Vanguard to Vanguard's pop-leaning Nashville operation and, with it, a slight accommodation to the commercial country market. The result is a more produced album than his best Vanguard work but one that still showcases his flatpicking on "Shady Grove" and "Streamline Cannonball" with undiminished authority. Watson's ability to transform any setting into an expression of his North Carolina musical inheritance was essentially unshakeable. "Train that Carried My Girl From Town" demonstrates his affinity for older railroad songs, a repertoire he returned to throughout his career.
