My Mother’s Voice is a 2001 album by Kathy Kallick on Copper Creek Records (CCCD-0201), made up of songs she learned from her mother. Dodi Kallick was a folk singer in the Chicago area from the mid-1950s through the 1970s who performed, taught and helped start the city’s coffeehouse scene. Kallick, a co-founder of the Good Ol’ Persons, produced the album with Jim Nunally, who recorded and mastered it in Crockett, California.

Kallick sings lead throughout and plays guitar on all but two tracks. Instead of a band, most songs have one or two guests. Lynn Morris sings and plays clawhammer banjo on “East Virginia Blues,” with Ron Stewart on fiddle. Peter Rowan joins her on “Hello Stranger,” “Shady Grove” and “Banks of the Ohio,” with Darol Anger’s fiddle on “Shady Grove.” Claire Lynch sings “I Never Will Marry” with her, and Laurie Lewis sings and fiddles on “Wreck of the Old #9.” Suzanne Thomas, Keith Little, James Leva and Carol Elizabeth Jones, and Jody Stecher and Kate Brislin sing on other tracks. Norton Buffalo plays harmonica and Sally Van Meter slide guitar on “Willie Poor Boy.” “The Tailor & the Mouse” is unaccompanied.

The Kathy Kallick Band plays on two songs, “Waterbound,” which Kallick had recorded with the Good Ol’ Persons in the 1980s, and “I’ll Fly Away.” A second collection of her mother’s songs, What Are They Doing in Heaven Today?, followed in 2022, together with performances by Dodi Kallick from WFMT’s Midnight Special in the 1960s.
