The Versatile Flatt & Scruggs: Pickin’, Strummin’ & Singin’ (Columbia CL 2354) came out in June 1965. Its twelve songs were recorded at Columbia Studio in Nashville at two sessions, on 15 December 1964 and 16 February 1965. Don Law and Frank Jones are credited as producers, and Nat Hentoff wrote the sleeve notes.
The band on the record is Lester Flatt on guitar and lead vocal, Earl Scruggs on banjo, Paul Warren on fiddle, Josh Graves on dobro and Jake Tullock on bass, with Charlie McCoy adding harmonica. Bluegrass Discography lists Scruggs on guitar rather than banjo for two tracks, “Rose Connelly” and “You’ve Been Fooling Me Baby.” On several songs, among them “Loafer’s Glory” and “Branded Wherever I Go,” the whole band sings, while “Wabash Cannonball,” “Will You Be Lonesome Too?” and “Rose Connelly” are Flatt solos.
The program mixes songs credited to Johnny Cash (“I Still Miss Someone”), A.P. Carter (“Wabash Cannonball”) and Roy Acuff (“Branded Wherever I Go”) with several credited to Flatt & Scruggs. “I Still Miss Someone” was issued as a single from the album in 1965 and reached No. 43 on the country chart.
