Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs left Bill Monroe in 1948 and formed the Foggy Mountain Boys, going on to become one of the two foundational bluegrass bands. Scruggs’s three-finger banjo style defined the instrument forever; Flatt’s rhythm guitar and lead vocals defined how bluegrass songs should be delivered. The “Beverly Hillbillies” theme made them household names. The band split in 1969 over musical direction. Forty-six recordings on this site canonically from their work.
