The Stanley Brothers

Folk Festival, released by King in 1965, is one of the label's stereo reissue projects of the Stanley Brothers' 1961 sessions — the same material that had appeared on earlier King mono LPs, remixed for the home-stereo market the label was newly courting. The session backbone is from the brothers' productive January 1961 King dates, with the Clinch Mountain Boys of the moment framing the Stanleys' close harmony. Like much of King's mid-1960s Stanley catalog, the album traded on the back catalog rather than fresh recordings, but the underlying performances — particularly Ralph Stanley's banjo work — held their value against the years.
