I Want to Preach the Gospel, released in 1973 by Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys, is a pure gospel album that places Stanley's modal, ancient-sounding voice at the center of a set of sacred material that feels more connected to the nineteenth century than to contemporary Nashville. "The Fields Have Turned Brown" is one of Stanley's most celebrated recordings — a Carter Family piece that, in Stanley's hands, becomes something close to American music's version of folk tragedy. By the early 1970s Stanley had found an audience among folk revival listeners who recognized in his music an authenticity that no amount of commercial production could manufacture or replace.
